THE WORTH OF A MAN OR WOMAN

Several of my colleagues and friends have gone home to be with God recently; and as I was thinking of each of them on today, I wondered what the worth of a man or woman is really. Many of us will define their worth by the way they looked, dressed or how they carried themselves. Others of us will term their worth by their accomplishments, i.e., how many books they have written, whether or not they are sort after in their own area of expertise, or if they are well known. Some of us will even count their worth by what they have done for us individually.

I wonder however what really determines the worth of man or woman. Webster Dictionary says worth means - the value of something measured by its qualities or by the esteem in which it is held or a moral or personal value. So if this is true is one’s worth based solely on their quality of life; the esteem in which they are held, and if this is deemed to be true; then where does their moral and personal values come into play. Do one’s moral and personal values actually affect a person’s worth? Can we equate their worth without analyzing their moral and personal values?

This all leaves me in a bit of a quandary a I examine my own life and my worth, for I know without God I am nothing, and I truthfully consider that my life must be based on personal and moral values as well as an accurate value of life. This value of life must encompass not only my life, but the lives of my fellowman. Now with this knowledge in hand I consider these things:

1. My life is nothing without God.

2. I must love and treat my fellowman as I care for myself.

3. I must pursue moral and personal values which will enhance my worth.

While reading the Bible, I realize even David considered these things and asked God, “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? As we can see from this Scripture, Psalms 8:4; that even David was wondering about the worth of a man or woman. However, when we look at the vast expanse of creation, we may also wonder how God could be concerned for people who constantly disappoint him. Yet God created us only a little lower than himself or the angels. The next time you question your worth as a person, remember that God considers you highly valuable. We have great worth because we bear the stamp of the Creator. Genesis 1:26-27 says, “Then God said. “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all creatures that move along the ground. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.â€

It is more likely than not that our entire self reflects the image of God. We will never be totally like God because he is our supreme Creator. But we do have the ability to reflect his character in our love, patience, forgiveness, kindness, and faithfulness.

So in conclusion, I realize our worth must be consistent with who God is and incorporate the characteristics of God. Our personal and moral convictions as well as our accurate value of life must entail all of who we are, and our worth. I fully understand that I cannot evaluate another man or woman’s worth, but I must constantly and consistently examine myself and strive to do all I can to keep from falling short of the Glory of God.

I pray that this writing helps you in some way as you seek to be more and more like God, and to walk in His goodness and love.
